Do not use any chemicals. Should you accidentally spill a chemical such as an alkali or acid on the work-surface, remove it immediately using a cloth and near cold water. Remember that some common house-hold cleaners may contain these chemicals. Granite is porous and any chemical that seeps in may cause structural damage to it. Avoid contact with strong steel. Strong steel can scratch the surface of the granite so do not chop or put heavy pans directly on it. Wire wool (mild steel) however, is an excellent product for removing any stains on the work-surface.
Avoid contacting the surface with precious stones. Precious stones such as diamonds can scratch the surface of the granite. Do not stand on the work-surface. Stones can end up wedged in shoes which can cause scratches. Granite also becomes weakened around the cut-outs which can crack if excessive weight is placed on these points.
